The Beginnings of Pilgrim Jewellery

Pilgrim was started as a trading company in 1983 by husband and wife Thomas Adamsen and Annemette Markvad. They began by reselling pieces of jewellery they had amassed from their travels in the East at festivals. Eventually, the then small time entrepreneurs began crafting their own Pilgrim jewellery designs.

The idea of making a business out of selling jewellery started when a stranger in Aarhus asked Adamsen to take care of his little jewellery booth for a few hours. He noticed that it sold very well – people loved jewellery and he had fun selling them.

Always quick at turning a great concept into a reality, the couple turned their two storey apartment in Skanderborg, Denmark into a place where Pilgrim jewellery was designed, crafted and packed.

Soon the couple began exhibiting
and selling Pilgrim jewellery in several trade fairs and rock concerts around Denmark. Claiming to draw inspiration from anywhere such as leaves and flowers in the garden, something interesting in the streets and even people, Pilgrim soon caught a following.

Their very first big hit was similar to the black chains worn by popular music artists back then. Selling millions of them, the husband and wife tandem had to move their Pilgrim jewellery production at the basement of a huge old house. Family members and friends had to get involved as well to catch up with the growing demand.

Pilgrim became as a design company in 1999. Pilgrim jewellery first became a pretty big deal in Europe. With its growing number of followers finding their designs uniquely special, it eventually took the world by storm. It then became a limited company in 2002.
